Did Nancy Pelosi Violate The Logan Act?

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi may well have committed a felony in traveling to Damascus this week, against the wishes of the president, to communicate on foreign-policy issues with Syrian President Bashar Assad. The administration isn’t going to want to touch this political hot potato, nor should it become a partisan issue. (link)
I agree that this should not become a partisan issue, both sides should call for an investigation of Nancy Pelosi’s unapproved negotiation with foreign governments. The Bush administration should investigate this matter vigorously and indict Pelosi for violation of the Logan Act.
Moonbats are already using the moral equivalence card arguing that several House Republicans also visited Syrian President Bashar Assad recently, so using moonbat illogic if Republicans can do it why not Pelosi? Personally I believe they should all be investigated, but the difference here is clearly stated in the
§ 953. Private correspondence with foreign governments
Any citizen of the United States, wherever he may be, who, without authority of the United States, directly or indirectly commences or carries on any correspondence or intercourse with any foreign government or any officer or agent thereof, with intent to influence the measures or conduct of any foreign government or of any officer or agent thereof, in relation to any disputes or controversies with the United States, or to defeat the measures of the United States, shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than three years, or both.
This section shall not abridge the right of a citizen to apply, himself or his agent, to any foreign government or the agents thereof for redress of any injury which he may have sustained from such government or any of its agents or subjects.
Visiting Syria is very different than the intent to influence a foreign government. If any of these politicians violated the Logan Act they should be charged, fined, and imprisoned. I don’t care what political party they are a part of, if they violated the law they should pay for their crimes.

Thanks for the link. Pelosi has clearly crossed the line. What’s very scary is that she probably has no idea what the fuss is all about. How can liberals not understand the danger in sending mixed messages to our enemies? They are extremely reckless with our security to gain political favor.

I believe the Democrats do understand what they are doing Scott. Too many people give them the benefit of the doubt and pretend that Dems just have a difference of opinion. It is much more than a difference of opinion, I believe they intentionally undermine America and should be treated as a threat.

ShadowFox, it is not Bush’s job to do something about it. he is the President, not the principle. the question you should be asking is where is Kenneth Starr? is it ok to spen $120mil to find out if the President got a BJ, but ignore when the Speaker breaks the law? she paints herself as such a moral person, but remember she is the one that pushed FOR raising the minimum wage EXCEPT in the US territories, where Dole has alarge amount of their fruit farms. Oh, did I mention that Dole HQ is in SanFran where Pelosy is from?

The Democrats are self-destructing again. Leading contenders who cannot win — too far left; Polosi’s expensive plane and now Pelosi’s stupidity. Sometimes I think the Democrats just ringers paid off by the Republicans.
It’s too bad because our country needs balance. It needs its constitution restored. Of course, the Democrats were complicit in the constitutional havoc wreaked by certain terms of the Patriot Act, the disregard of the Geneva convention on a technicality, the locking up of an American in a military brig without access to counsel until commanded by the courts, the CIA secret prisons. No doubt, rather than addressing these issues, they’ll making a good use of their time they actually show up at Congress by holding a hearings on IMUS.
Here are two proposed Constitutional Amendments: (1) Congress can only meet three months a year to pass legislation and another three months in which they can only terminate laws and the rest of the time they live like normal people, not spoiled, rich Pelosi-like dilettantes; (2) No private funding of political candidates. Public channel on which ANY of them can get press, not just whoever the media dubs the leading contenders.
