How To Get More Feed Subscribers Using Add This

So you want more feed subscribers? Who doesn’t? I want to show you a quick and easy way to simplify the feed subscription process for your readers and visitors that will help you get more subscribers to your feed. Interested? Addthis.com makes it easy for you to add this simple button to your site that can help you increase your site’s feed subscriptions and clean up some of the clutter in your sidebar(s). Let me show you how easy it can be.

The Standard Feed Button

You’ve probably added the standard feed icon like the one below to your website:

Subscribe to Passionate America

If you already have a standard feed icon on your site skip ahead to the next section. If you do not have a standard feed button on your site and would like to add one, right click on the feed icon and click “save image as” (Firefox) or “save picture as” (Internet Explorer) and download the button to your computer. You will have to upload the feed button picture to your sever (if you have a self hosted site) or you can upload it to the site you use to store your pictures on the internet.

Find a good place on your site’s sidebar (I suggest as close to the top of your sidebar(s) as possible) and insert this code.

<a href="<strong>url for your site&#8217;s feed here</strong>&#8221; ><img src="<strong>url where the feed icon picture was uploaded here</strong>&#8221; width=&#8221;32&#8243; height=&#8221;32&#8243; alt=&#8221;Subscribe&#8221; title=&#8221;Subscribe&#8221; border=&#8221;0&#8243; /></a>

You’ll have to copy your feed url where it says, “url for your site’s feed here” and you’ll need to replace “url where the feed icon picture was uploaded here” with the url for the uploaded image. With that done you can save the changes to your site and you should now have a standard feed button that readers/visitors can use to subscribe to your feed. Now let’s move on to the old way of making your feed subscribeable to users of the many different feed readers that are available. Chicklets…

Oh Look, Chicklets

Chicklets sound yummy, but I’m not talking about candy, the chicklets I am talking about can multiple and before you know it you might have an entire sidebar filled with them. Add This has made it possible to reclaim valuable sidebar space on your site and replace all those chicklets with one easy to use button.

You might have even added individual chicklets for some of the most popular feed readers to your site like some of the ones below.

AddThis Feed Widget

You are almost done, all you need to do now is create your AddThis Feed Widget and add the code to your site. To get started click here (this link will open in a new window.) Here is what you’ll see:

AddThis Social Widget Builder

The first drop down menu asks you, “Which kind of widget?” you want to install. Select the Feed widget. Next click beside the image of the button you would like to add to your site. There are 6 choices, select the one that works the best for the layout of your site. Moving on it needs to know Where? Where do you want to put the widget? Select to best description for the kind of site you want to add the widget to. Next enter the feed url. After that depending on how you answered the question, “Where do you want to put the widget?” you might have another drop down menu to make a selection from. If you see this drop down menu use it to make the best selection. Next you are asked if you Want stats with that? If you want the widget to track stats on your site select yes and then you will have to sign up for a free account on AddThis.com. It is not necessary to sign up for stats, but it is a really cool added feature. Finally click “Get Your Free Button” and you are taken to a page that looks like the one below.

AddThis Feed Button Website

Now all you need to do is copy the code they give you and paste it into your site template where you want the AddThis Feed Widget to be displayed. Don’t forget to save the changes you just made to your site. If all goes right you should have a button that looks like this on your site.
