How To Score Yourself For Better Blogging
Finding a way to motivate yourself, better organize yourself, and improve your blogging systems is the goal of every successful blogger (well almost every successful blogger.) Now there is and easy way to track your daily blogging to-do lists. Using a blogging points system you can grow your blog, increase site traffic, and help you achieve your blogging goals.
Ben Cook at Blogging Experiment has been using a blogging points system that problogger Darren Rowse mentioned in his post, How to Keep Momentum Going on Your Blog with a ‘Points System’. Eve at Confessions of a Housewife took the time to make an easy to use spreadsheet to implement what she calls The Blog Points System.
I’m working on my own Passionate Blogger Blog Points System to motivate myself to do a certain amount of blogging related work each day on my 2 blogs. I downloaded Eve’s The Blog Points System - Excel Sheet and made some changes. Click on the picture below to download my version or The Blog Points System.
How To Use The Passionate Blogger Blog Points System
Sometimes it is hard to determine what you have done on a particular day and find ways to improve your level of productivity. By using this system you can track your blogging efforts and quickly gauge your daily productivity. Here is the list of blogging related activities that are included on you can track to motivate you to reach your blogging goals.
- write a long blog post — 10 points
- write a short blog post — 5 points
- comment on a site I’ve commented on before — 2 points
- comment on a site I’ve never commented on before — 5 points
- respond to comments on my blog — 1 point
- install a new feature/plug-in, etc. — 10 points
- email another blogger with a link to a relevant post — 2 points
- IM conversation with a blogger in my niche — 3 points
- answer a reader’s question via email — 2 points
- submit post to a blog carnival — 5 points
- partner with another blogger — 10 points
- create promotional things for your visitors to use — 5 points
- create a plan for a blueprint or series of articles — 20 points
- submit a post to Digg and/or StumbleUpon — 1 point
- set up a profile on a social networking site — 10 points
- submit your site to a directory/search engine — 2 points
Each of these activities have a different point value. The standard goal is to accumulate 50 total points each day. You can use any combination of activities on the list to meet your daily goal. As an example, here is what I did today to reach my goal for Passionate America:
- 10 points 1 long blog post
- 10 points 2 short blog posts
- 20 points 10 comments on other blogs
- 5 points 1 comment on a new blog
- 1 point responded to comments on my blog
- 2 points emailed another blogger with a link
- 2 points submitted my blog site to a blog directory
- 50 points total
Now I just need to get busy on my other blog (more information about my new blog later.)
I want to thank Eve from Confessions of a Housewife for creating the spreadsheet. You can find out more about her Blogging Points System here. The changes I made to the spreadsheet work better for me and I hope they will help you.

Thanks Ben, we should partner up sometime and guest blog for each other (see I’m a quick learner, I’m trying for 10 more points!) You have a great idea for a blog going there Ben. I’ll have to review your blog sometime.

Sorry Bill. The roommate thing combined with the hospital thing all wrapped up with the what just happened to my computer thing have equaled me being out of it lately. Hopefully I can find my groove again soon.

I guess I could put bashing trolls on the list. Not sure how many points that would be worth. To bad I don’t enjoy troll stomping as much as I used to. Actually it is a good thing.

Thanks for your comment Priscillia. I have been using this points system for almost a week now and although I do not reach my goal each day it is inspiring my competitive nature and I try to get more points each day. Hope it helps you.
