Ever heard of the mujahadeen in Afghanistan? We supported them against their war with the Soviets during the 1980s. They have one or two alumni who have since become a thorn in their side. Some guy named Osama bin Laden...I think that's his name. In other words many of the weapons floating around Afghanistan are of Soviet and US origin.
